What is meant by being yourself?
Being you simply means not being an imitation of someone else. Don’t try to change yourself into anyone. Be who you are. Do what you want to but do what is right as well.
Don Miguel Ruiz, a Mexican spiritualist said:
“Be impeccable with your word. Speak with integrity. Say only what you mean. Avoid using the word to speak against yourself or gossip about others. Use the power of your word in the direction of truth and love.”
When you speak or act ask yourself whether you are being true to yourself. Do what you want to do and don’t be influenced by what the people around you say. Doing what you want to do doesn’t mean doing what is not right. Try to be the real you and be authentic.
Shakespeare also said:
“This above all: to thine own self be true,
And it must follow, as the night the day,
Thou canst not then be false to any man.”
No matter the step you take you have to stay true to yourself. That’s how you become truthful to others. If you are not true to you then you cannot be you. Being true to yourself actually, means you do what you would do or would want to do.
How do I be myself?
1.Believe in you and be you
Believe in your abilities and capabilities. Be confident. It is difficult to be you if you are not confident and you don’t believe in you. Make it a point to be positive about yourself. Build a wall of positivity around you. A wall which cannot be broken by the influence of others. This is a great step to being you.
Do what you want to do and what you have to do. Don’t do things out of the way (things that do not conform to your values and beliefs) just to impress others or just to be accepted. The act of trying to impress others makes you into a different person. Thus, you are not being you. Also, don’t compare yourself to others.
3.Be open and truthful
All of us are imperfect so being open doesn’t spoil anything. Admit your mistakes and say sorry. Be honest with yourself and the people around you.
